Fiji Wedding Guide
Fiji is a stress free and beautiful place to get married and most resorts offer wedding packages with ceremonies held on the beachfront. The most idyllic beach wedding locations are Matamanoa Island Resort (see p.000) in the Mamanucas; Oarsman’s Bay Lodge (see p.000) in the Yasawas; and Matangi Island Resort (see p.000) off Taveuni. Several resorts also have purpose built wedding chapels including Sofitel Fiji Resort on Denarau Island (a small wooden chapel beside the beach); Outrigger Lagoon (perched on a hill overlooking the resort) and Fijian Resort (large whitewash chapel facing the ocean) both on the Coral Coast; and Treasure Island (with a glass floor and walls), Mana Island Resort (whitewashed chapel facing the ocean), Amunuca Island Resort (perched on a hill) and Tokoriki Island Resort (heavy wood chapel overlooking lawns), all in the Mamanucas. For those with large groups in attendance, getting married on the main island of Viti Levu is more convenient, but the atmosphere on the offshore islands is far more intimate and a much better option for smaller wedding parties. Generally, the larger the resort, the less intimate your wedding will be – and it’s likely you won’t be the only one getting married that day. At a small resort, the staff are more likely to be attentive and to make you feel important. If getting married on the beach, find out about the tides and sun direction before fixing a time and bear in mind at 2pm the sun is extremely hot. Morning weddings are worth considering as its not only cooler and less windy, but it’s less likely to be raining -- there’s nothing more dampening than reciting your vows in a makeshift alter in the resort restaurant or huddling under an umbrella. The practicalities of obtaining a marriage license are very straightforward and all resorts will help with the paperwork – at least two days before marriage, you need to visit the local registrar or district office (Nadi District Office, on the first floor of Ratu Napolioni House on Koroivolu Avenue, close to the police station in Nadi Town, t% 670 0101; or Sigatoka District Office, Lawaqa Road, t%650 0014; other registrars or district offices in Suva, Lautoka, Savusavu, Labasa and Taveuni; Mon—Fri 8am—3pm; $20.25), and  fill out a simple form providing your original birth certificates, passports, written parental consent if under 21 years and a copy of divorce papers, Decree Nisi or death certificate for second marriages.
